Kent County’s AED Selfie Challenge
Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in the United States each year, with an estimated 350,000 people experiencing SCA outside of a hospital setting annually. Prompt CPR and AED use can drastically improve a person's chances of survival, with studies suggesting that individuals who receive this intervention within 3 minutes of collapse have over a 70% chance of survival. However, each minute compressions and defibrillation are delayed reduces someone's odds of surviving SCA by 7-10%. Knowing the location of the nearest AED, and how to properly use it, can be the difference between life and death.
With February being National Heart Month, in an effort to raise awareness about AEDs the American Red Cross has started the AED Selfie Challenge, encouraging people to take pictures of themselves in front of an AED, then posting that picture on social media.
